Q-BITS: Cotton Quilts

My first love in quilting will always be the design and making of traditional quilts using cotton fabric. I use a variety of techniques including rotary cutting, fussy cutting by hand, hand piecing, machine piecing, paper piecing, and machine or hand applique. I will always enjoy and prefer hand quilting the layers together. When I was writing my books, it was necessary because of time restraints to send out some of the tops for machine quilting. As I am a control freak, I've always regretted that -- they just never seem like they are totally my creations even though they were expertly machine quilted. But, now in my elderly years because of arthritis and failing eyesight, I am resorting to learning about machine quilting on my domestic machine. All of the quilt tops were made by me; and when they were quilted by someone else, it is so noted. Also, the quilts, except where noted, are owned by my husband, Bob, and me.

Some of the quilts I love, some not so much; but I have learned something from every quilt I've made, and hopefully improved over the years.

The utility quilts that I made between 1951 and 1980 are gone -- used up -- discarded -- relegated to the rag bag! Any photos of quilts during that time are also missing in action. Somewhere, there should be some pictures of some hand-quilted pillows from the late 1960s; I'm still looking.
